Spring Layout – The Daffodils Are Out

Digital Scrapbook Layout

Dragons Lair Designs have a new challenge!

The details can all be found on the Dragons Lair Designs Blog – here!

A challenge with a bit of difference this time.  You need to create something, anything at all, either physical or digital, using any items from two digital mini kits.  One you can buy in the store and the other you can collect for FREE from the blog.

As soon as I saw the yellow colour in the kit image the first thing that jumped to my mind was the daffodils that I’d been looking at earlier in the day outside our front door.

So off I clicked to get both parts of the kit, and then I nipped outside (OK I don’t “nip” anywhere with my dodgy leg, etc., – it was more of a slow crawl LOL) and took some quick photos of some of the flowers.

I downloaded these from my camera to my laptop and selected a small number to work with, including this one –

It was then a case of selecting at least one digital element from both the mini digital kits and then putting everything together to make a digital layout.   In the end I decided to cluster and overlap my photos.

And this is my finished layout –

the main background at the back came from the freebie mini kit and the rest of the elements came from the mini kit from the store.

Inspiration For “Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog” – January 2017

I Know! – Long Time No Blog!

On top of my usual health, and disabling conditions issues, I managed to catch a nasty virus around Christmas Time and spent a while around the New Year with no voice and no energy whatsoever.  It’s taken me this long to improve a little bit and get enough energy to get on my laptop to work on my Design Team inspiration pieces for Dragons Lair Designs.

I should have posted my inspiration piece for the Dragons Lair Designs Inspiration Blog at the begining of the month some time, and posted my inspiration piece for the Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog – January Challenge the 1st Friday of the month.  But here I am at the 20th without doing either.  So I’ve decided to make a combined, “digital”, creation for this month, and hope I’ve improved quite a bit more by next month to make up for my lack of crafting inspiration lately.

.

Here’s a bit about the challenge blog, with links –

DLD Challenge BadgeDLD DT BadgeEach ”Dragons Lair Designs Challenge” goes live the first Friday of the month with a new theme each time. The winner will get picked by “Random” so that it is fair for all levels of crafters. The winner gets a prize, as well as a badge for their blog, and the winning entry will also be highlighted on the challenge blog the following month. Although we’d love to see Dragons Lair Designs items on your creation, you may ENTER the challenge using ANY MATERIAL you wish as long as you clearly follow the set theme. You may enter the challenge with ONE entry per month. So why not consider joining in with us this month – go to the challenge blog and have a look at the rules and the inspiration created by my fellow Design Team members.

The theme for January 2017 is “New Beginnings”

This can be ANY ONE project interpreting the theme NEW BEGINNINGS in whatever way you are inspired! While the image gives the impression of a baby card the theme is more open and can be any new beginning.

.

As I said earlier that I was going digital this month I’m guessing that most of you are thinking I’ve gone for digital scrapbooking – but no, I’ve gone down a new route this time.

As well as new babies, “New Beginnings” can also bring to mind New Year’s Resolutions.  But I’m not big on them.  So my inspiration project isn’t strictly about New Year’s Resolutions either but more of a reminder to myself, and anybody else who will use my laptop, that regular breaks should be taken when working on computer screens.

What I decided to do was use the skills and software I usually use to create digital scrapbooking pages to create a new background for my laptop desktop to remind myself to rest often while on the laptop.  I don’t know about you but when I am feeling reasonable I tend to keep going for far longer than I should and then pay for it with worse health for days afterwords, so by making a layout to replace the choice of half a dozen generic backgrounds that come with Windows I hope to remind myself as the laptop goes on that I need to take breaks.

.

CREATION:

I started by finding the resolution of my laptop desktop area (right click, graphics properties, then display gave me what I wanted on my laptop).

I then opened my software and drew out an area in the same proportions on my working area.

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Equipment:

  • My Craft Studio Elite software

Method:

I like to have my program icons placed in separate areas on my screen for different types of software and software I use most often, so as well as making a panel with my reminder using items from the Artistic Expressions collection I also used other items from the collection to make zones on my working area.

Having played around for a bit I was happy with my layout and saved it as a .jpg file.

I then went into the “Personalise” area in windows (Right click on an empty bit of the desktop and select “Personalize” on my laptop).  Then I “Browsed” to the location I’d saved my file and selected it.

And this is the result.

I think I need to change the position of a few things a little bit, but as a 1st attempt I’m quite pleased with my new desktop layout.

I know that any image on a laptop or computer can be set as a background on a computer, but I think that having a play with creating a new digital layout, that could of course be a “digital scrapbook” style layout with photos and captions if you want, can make the experience of looking at a computer when it is turned on a bit different.  And of course you could have a “new begining” however often you wanted by creating a new layout with a new photo or caption.

There are so many different directions you can go for this theme – You may choose to work on anything using the colours from within the picture, or perhaps harvest, or thanksgiving, or choose just one item from within the picture to concentrate on. So many ideas to play with. I can’t wait to see what everybody comes up with this month.

Please join in and let us see your crafted creation.

.

CREATION:

There just wasn’t enough time on the day of our thanksgiving service at the chapel for me to do everything, so I gave my 10 year old nephew a bucket full of vegetation he’d helped me cut, some fruit and veg, and asked him to make a display in the lobby while I got on with other stuff. Then I gave him my phone to photograph his creation. He even got a dustpan and brush and swept up the leaves and petals that had fallen on the floor while he was working.  He even came back with me later in the week to clear everything he’d put up before the following week’s service.

So this month I decided to use his photo of his display to make a quick digital layout using one of the Dragons Lair Designs collections to go with it.  I have printed it out as well to add to my mother’s collection of my 8″ square layouts.

I then used a digital cutter within the software to shape the photograph before laying everything out and resizing until I was happy with my layout.

Equipment:

  • My Craft Studio Elite software

Method:

I chose a “haloween” themed collection from Dragons Lair Designs for my creation this time.  I picked photos of two of my nephews dressed up in their Haloween costumes – a large black spider with 8 long legs on a giant spider’s web, and  skeleton with black hooded cape – together with one of the pumpkins that they’d carved, and used a digital cutter within the My Craft Studio software to cut them into scalloped circle shapes with black matting and layering.  I also used a digital cutter from within the software to cut a cat shape from one of the backgrounds in the digital collection.

I then had some fun laying out everything at different sizes and positions until I was happy with the  layout.  I then printed out a copy for my mother’s collection of my 8″ square layouts although it’s the digital layout that you can see in this post.

CREATION:

This summer my father not only celebrated his 85th birthday, but he also had his autobiography published, so I decided that an Open Book Card would be a suitable birthday card for him this time. And, of course, an Open Book card is a card style that’s suitable for the DLD Challenge as well, so I killed two birds with one stone this time.

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Equipment:

  • My Craft Studio Elite software
  • Tattered Lace Open Book Dies
  • Scissors
  • Joy Cutting and Embossing Machine

Consumables:

  • 250gsm Super Smooth white cardstock
  • Pinflair Glue Gel
  • Tonic Funky Glue
  • Matt Silver Cardstock

BookCard 01 01

Method:

I started off by taking several items from the DLD collection I’d chosen, together with a photo of my father when he was our town mayor, into the My Craft Studio software.  I played around with sizes and positions of the picture in a frame element from the collection, and also the greeting for the card.

Once I was happy with what I’d got I printed everything out and started cutting everything out.  I used one of the the smaller book shapes from the die set for the greetings, then drew around the outside of them onto white cardstock and cut them out to give a mat a slight bit bigger for each and sticking them together.  I used a series of the larger book dies for the main card shape.  I just cut out the frame and the “brad” elements with scissors.

I shaped all the “book page” layers over the side of a table before sticking them all together, and I used glue gel for dimension for adding the elements at the end.

This is a very dimensional card and I enclosed a wooden stand with it when I gave it.

BookCard 01 03I think that these pictures show how dimensional I made the card and embelishments.

CREATION:

I decided to use items from a Dragons Lair Designs collection called Victorian Christmas.  The collection contains a sheet to print off to make a rectangular pyramage card, but in view of the popularity of square cards at the moment I decided to have a play around with this sheet, together with other items from the collection, to create a square card front, with the illusion of dimension, that can be printed out at 4″ square to just about 8″ square (when a printer allows printing to the edge).

ChristmasInAugust01

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

  • Victorian Christmas

Equipment:

  • My Craft Studio Elite software

Method:

I started off by taking the pyramage card topper sheet into the software, resizing it, and copying it so I had 3 copies.  I then used the rectangular digital punch in the software to cut out the three layers of the pyramage.  I then put these one on top of the other, matching up the image, as if I was working with the printed out image.  Once the layers were in place I used the DropShaddow effect and Blur Radius to give the layers the impression of being raised on foam pads or dimensional glue.

I then took a background and tied ribbon element from the collection, put the background behind, positioned the “dimensional” pyramage, and added the tied ribbon.

I then added the greeting “Nadolig Llawen” (which is Welsh for Merry Christmas).  I typed it in black, copied it, and changed the one behind to white.  I then moved the black layer slightly to give an ofset look.

This is now ready to be printed off at a variety of sizes.  I’ve been doing a bit of a tidy up of my crafting stash with the help of a nephew.  Not got as far as I’d like, but have found a lot of pre-cut and scored square card bases in a variety of sizes that I can just measure and print out these card fronts at the right size, cut, stick on, and decorate with a little glitteraround the frame.

With postage being expensive for dimensional cards, using software to get a dimensional look but only actually sticking one sheet of cardstock on a card front, it keeps the weight of the card down, and using the smaller square base cards will keep the dimension of the cards small enough to go through the post using a standard stamp in the UK.

The theme for July is “It’s a Zoo Out There!”  Your creation doesn’t have to have a zoo on it – anything animal, or even a bird, you might see in a zoo, or in fact any animal at all, will be great.  We want to see your take on the theme.

Please join in and let us see your crafted creation.

CREATION:

I’ve gone for a card this time as my inspiration for this challenge.  I couldn’t resist the Baby Giraffe digi-stamp to play with and chose other items from the DLD online store to go with it.

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

  • 2 of A4 linen textured white cardstock to make 21cm base card
  • Roller glue tape
  • Pinflair Glue Gel
  • Sheets of A4 250gsm white super smooth cardstock
  • Ultra tacky red backed tape.

Equipment:

  • My Craft Studio Elite software
  • Scissors
  • Hougie Board
  • Paper trimmer
  • Nuvo alcohol markers

Method:

I scored one sheet of cardstock and trimmed the other to make my base card by attaching them together using ultra tacky tape.

I took several items from the papers collection, as well as both digi stamps, into the My Craft Studio software.  I played around with the sizes of the items until I was happy with the proportions and used a digital die cut function in the software to cut kits of branches from one stripy background that I placed at different angles on a green background.  Once I was happy with everything I printed out the digi stamps, the background with branches, and a couple of other background paper Designs and cut them all out.  I cut one of the backgrounds diagonally across as well.

I then used the roller tape pen to attach the backgrounds in place.

I coloured in the two digi stamps, cut them out and shaped them, before attaching them to the card front with glue gel.

Here are a few more, angled, photos of my card – getting closer and closer.

CREATION:

I decided to make a male themed card with a vintage touch for this month’s inspiration for the Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog.  It’s going to be a Father’s Day card for my father, who’s fond of saying that he’s a vintage model himself, and as he was an agricultural contractor for many years I decided to go for an old tractor from the DLD online store for my main image.

OFTG04

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

  • Super smooth white 250gsm cardstock
  • Wood effect cardstock from DCWV pack
  • 1mm deep double sided foam tape
  • Tonic funky glue
  • Fingerlift tape
  • 8″ square base card.

Equipment:

  • My Craft Studio software
  • Scissors

Method:

I started making this card by taking lots of the elements from the kit, together with the tractor digi-stamp into the MCS software.  I then used the software to change the colour of the tractor to a more sepia colour to tone with the browns of the kit pieces.  I layed everything out on my work area to make a card front of around 7″ square size.  I added the word Dad, as the card is one I intend to give my father for Father’s Day.

I then printed the sheet out twice.  One I simply cut out the whole card front topper and the other I cut out the tag, framed tractor, and three faux gem/brads.

I took my base card and stuck the woodgrain background to the front of it, trimming it to size and then going round the edge with the edge of the scissors to give it a distressed look.  I did the same to the tag, and frame.   The main card front panel was stuck to the card using fingerlift tape before using the foam tape to attach the second layers where needed.

Today we see the start of a new challenge on the “Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog” – and I’m now shareing the inspiration piece I created on this month’s theme.

For May the theme is “Women at Work”. Any make with a woman involved at crafts or any of the thousands of jobs women do!

Please join in and let us see your crafted creation.

.

CREATION:

It has been several months since I made a digital scrapbook layout as my design team inspiration for a DLD Challenge, so I thought that I’d have a flick through my digital album of photos and see what I found showing any women in my family at work.  Funnily enough there were not a lot of them, but I did find this photo showing two of them hard at work in a garden.

And as soon as I spotted it I knew that the new “Butterfly Garden” collection that went live in the Dragons Lair Designs online store on the 1st of this month would be perfect to go with it.

Then I went and searched online for the rhyming couplet I half remembered about women’s work.

Hope you like what I’ve come up with.

Womans Work b

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

  • Butterfly Garden” – there’s still a discount in the DLD online store for this until 14th.

Equipment:

  • My Craft Studio software
  • IrfanView software

Method:

I took my photo, together with lots of the items from within the Buterfly Garden collection into the My Craft Studio Elite software and resized, repositioned, turned around, etc., until I was happy with the layout.  I added the date to one of the panels from the kit and the couplet I’d found that I thought was apt to one of the elements of the kit that looks like a plant marker.

After I was satisfied with my creation I saved it as both a mcs file and a .jpg file.  I took the .jpg file into IrfanView for doing the final re-sizing and watermarking (I use it for my photos so easier for me to do the watermarking in this software than My Craft Studio as it is already set up in IrfanView).

I hope you like my layout and that you will join us in the Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog this month.

Crafting, House Work, Reading Bedtime Story, Mending Clothes, Tending To Damaged Knees, Gardening, Teaching, Nursing, Doctor, Secretary, Florist, Seamstress, Business Owner, Painter And Decorator, Preacher, etc., and the list goes on and on – what Women’s Work will you use on your entry. Today we see the start of a new challenge on the “Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog” – and I’m now shareing the inspiration piece I created on this month’s theme.

CREATION:

I was in the middle of crocheting a scarf when I received items from the new “Artistic Expressions” collection (that’s launched in the Dragons Lair Designs online store today) to play with.  As soon as I saw the new collection I decided it would be perfect to use to decorate a gift bag to put my creation in when it was finished.  In fact, I decided to also crochet a floppy bag to match the scarf and put both in the gift bag.

GiftBagCollection 01

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

  • A4 sheets of 250gsm Super Smooth white cardstock
  • A4 sheet of 350gsm white cardstock
  • Funky Glue Pen
  • Three pieces of yearn – the same as used for crocheted scarf and bag
  • 5 Pink Eyelets
  • Acetate
  • Nuvo metalic pen

Equipment:

  • Scissors
  • Hougie Board
  • Trimmer
  • Crop-a-dial
  • My Craft Studio software

Method:

I started by taking items from the kit into My Craft Studio Elite software, resizing one square panel and printing it out twice on super smooth cardstock to make the main panel front and back.  I then started building up, copying and resizing different items to make a tag, embelishments and a framed pocket.  Everything was then printed and cut out.

I used my scoreboard to score the cardstock with the panels on to make the front and back of the main bag shape and also to make the framed pocket to go on it.  Acetate was put in the frame window.

This pocket had the wording “Gwybodaeth Golchi” (which is Welsh for Washing Instructions) put on one of the tabs in the collection and digitally attached to the frame before printing, because I’m using the pocket to put in the yarn ball band that includes the washing instruction for the yarn.

GiftBagCollection 08

I cut a panel from the heavyweight cardstock to put inside the bottom of the bag for strength,

I used the funky glue to glue everything together.

It makes a spacious gift bag.

GiftBagCollection 06

The Crop-a-dial was used to put in holes and eyelets at the top of the bag and on the tag.  I wrote Sgarff (Welsh for Scarf) on the printed side of the tag – the other side being left blank for anybody to write a greeting for the recipient.

I took pieces of the yarn I’d used for the scarf and bag to make the gift bag handles and to thread through the tag to tie it to the gift bag.

GiftBagCollection 02So here’s the front and back of the bag.

This is the yarn I used to make the scarf and bag – it’s a sort of knitted ribbon type of yarn.
