An Update, Some Musings, and a Quick Card

-oOo-

Every now and then, in the Dragons Lair Designs Fan Group, we have some challenges posted by different design team members.  Earlier this month Susan posted a “SUSAN’S SPECIAL SOMETHING” where she challenged group members to “make SOMETHING GREEN, using SOMETHING from Dragons Lair”.  Susan gave us until the 17th to make and post a photo of our creation up in the group.

The first thing DLD that jumped to my mind when I thought “green” was Hoppy frog, so off I went into my digital library to find the digi-stamps that feature him.  I decided to actually keep the overall look of the card quite simple, with very little embelishment.  I’ve not put a greeting on yet as I don’t know what occasion he’ll be used for – I think it would be good for a child because he’s such a fun character.

You’ll find the card at the bottom of my post if you want to skip my musings

.

MUSINGS:

Well, all I can say is that this last weekend has been a weekend of hoaxes, half useful information, one like = a prayer posts, and the copying of various things to supposedly “show support” or “awareness” for this that and the other – as far as what I’ve seen appearing on my news feed.  And then add in a few scammers cloneing people’s accounts and sending Friend requests to annoy me as well.

The most prolific hoax I’ve seen over the last few days is the ‘Sonia Disowns Rahul’ Virus Hoax. It doesn’t take much time to do a quick check before mindlessly copying hoaxes like this.  Don’t give the person who started the hoax the fun of seeing their hoax perpetuated all over FB and elsewhere.

A month ago I mentioned that I was fed up with the  “Urgent: All the accounts are being hacked” that people were mindlessly copying.  Part of the information was true – but it described cloneing, not hacking.  As Hoax-Slayer says “This mislabeling of the attackers may seem unimportant.  However, it IS important that any Internet security warnings contain accurate and and easily understandable information. Mislabelling can cause confusion and potentially detract from the worth of the underlying message.”

I’ve not seen much of this mislabelled warning the last few weeks, but by yesterday it is back with a vengance – on this time it’s dropped the “All the accounts” and changed it to “So nearly everyone’s account is being hacked.”  No!  not nearly everyone’s accounts, and not hacked – Cloned!  (There are hackers out there as well of course, but that isn’t what is being described).  Yesterday, Monday, I received two “Friends” requests from coloned (copied) accounts of people I am already FB Friends with.  That’s two out of over 1,000 FB Friends being cloned, so hardly “nearly everybody” – but certainly something everybody should be aware is happening because both times there were people who’d already accepted the Friend request of the cloned account – that’s people who the cloner could now see everything they only share with friends.  I really would suggest that everybody does a quick search for every name that a friend request comes from to make sure that they are not already a friend with that person – the real person – and also to look critically at the person’s profile to see if they look genuine.

If I see something that I think is a bit dodgy on FB I look on places like the Hoax-Slayer FB Page, Hoax-Slayer website, Facecrooks FB Page, etc., etc. to see if they have any information.

I’m left wondering how copying and posting a – None of my FB Friends, only my true friends, I know which friends … known somebody… hero who’s fought and won … to raise awareness of cancer – etc., etc., – is actually suppose to raise awareness?  There’s never any information about cancer in there.  No information about anything you should be aware of, such as a symptom that should be looked out for and taken seriously for a particular type of cancer.  How about not mindlessly copying things that others have posted and posting a link to somewhere with usefull information, such as Cancer Research UK, where people can not only learn about cancer, the research currently being done, but also donate to help the fight against cancer.

And then we get to another scam – the 1 like = a prayer posts.  I’m sorry, but I think this is plain stupid, on top of often being scams.  I’m a great believer in prayer.  And do offer up a quiet prayer for people in my online circle of friends who are suffering, especially those who explain their circumstances and ask for prayers to be made on their behalf or on behalf of friends or family. But I fail to see how likeing a post on FB would equate to a prayer.  Jesus himself said that you should go and pray to God in the quiet, not on the corner of the street – and to my mind being seen likeing something on FB, without thought or any real prayer made, (the – it costs me nothing and it can’t do any harm – mentality) is a modern version of praying on the corner of the street – only not just your own street but every street in the world.  And these posts are also more likely than not to be scams – aimed at getting likes for a page so that it is worth more to scammers.  Start by reading about one of the old ‘Prayers for Likes‘, then have a read of “Facebook Like-Farming Scams“, and then have a look at a list of some of the different like farming types of scams.

.

CARD:

I printed the digital stamp – Hoppy Frog on Lily Pad – onto 250gsm Super Smooth white cardstock and coloured him and his reflection in using ProMarkers.  I then took a Spectrum Noir Sparkle pen and went all over what would be the water and the reflection. The sparkle shows up a bit in this photo I took before making up the card.

HoppyFrogColoured

This was stuck to the front of a 5″ square base card.  I then took a sheet of green Adorable Scoreable cardstock and cut it to 5″ hight along leaving a long strip from the front of the A4 sheet.  I cut a 4″ square out of the centre of the strip Leaving 5″ in the centre I scored on both sides and then at 1cm, 2cm, and cut at 3cm out.  These scores were folded, concertina style, and the last flap on both sides were stuck with super sticky tape to both sides of the card front to give a concertina sided frame.  I took some clear beading wire, knotted the bottom, added a green glass pearl, knotted a bit further up and added another bead, knotted a bit further up again and added another bead, and finished with a knot a bit above the third bead. I did this several times until I had 6 strings.  Taking three of these together I used sticky tape to attach them to the inside of the frame to one side of Hoppy.  I did the same the other side.

DSCF4137Once I know whether it will be for a boy or a girl I may add some more embelishments, I’m thinking perhaps a worm or a fly if it’s for a boy, or some blossom on the frame if it will be snet to a girl.  What do you think?

Here’s the grid –

Bingo Grid Challenge Suggestion

Please join in and let us see what creation you come up with on the theme.

.

CREATION:

I decided on the top row and made my creation using Pink, Anything From Dragons Lair Designs, and Parchment.

This is what I produced –

Gwyneth 03

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

  • 1 x pre cut and scored 9″ square card
  • 1 x 250gsm Super Smooth white cardstock
  • 1 x Sheet of Parchment
  • 2 x Pale Green Shades of Adorable Scoreable cardstock.
  • ProMarkers in colours: Tan, Tawny Owl, Summer Sun, Apple Cider, Pastel Pink, Chestnut
  • Pinflair Glue Gel
  • Tonic Pearl Drops

Equipment:

  • Tattered Lace Die Set
  • Baby Blue Die Cutting Machine
  • Parchment Lace Parchment Grid
  • Parchment Embossing and Piearcing Tool
  • Hougie Board
  • Trimmer
  • Fine scissors – parchment cutting

Method:

I started by using the grid from the latest Parchment Lace magazine to piearce and emboss the parchment with the bird house design and cut it out.

I printed the finch onto white cardstock and then coloured it in and cut it out.

The flowers and branches were die cut out of the waste white cardstock after cutting out the finch, and these were then coloured in with ProMarkers.

For the base card I scored the very palest green cardstock and cut it to make a square card.  The next green cardstock was then cut smaller than the card front to make a mat.  I went round the base card and mat using the Chestnut coloured ProMarker.  I used glue gel for all the sticking down, shaping the bird, flowers and foliage before sticking down.

The parchment bird house was glued behind where I inteded to put the bird and die-cuts so that none of the glue is visible.

I finished off with the pearl drops.

Here are a couple more photos of the card –

Today a new challenge starts on the “Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog” – so it’s time for me to share the inspiration piece I created on this month’s theme.

CREATION:

I decided to make a card using not a lot of anything other than a printout of a Dragons Lair Designs digi stamp, some cardstock, some sticky stuff, and some alcohol markers, with minimal tools.

This is what I produced –

PhotoInsp 03

It’s a birthday card for my mother later on this month.

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

  • 250gsm Super Smooth white cardstock
  • Quick grab wet glue
  • 3mm deep foam pads
  • Nuvo pens
  • Hougie Board
  • Scissors
  • Ruler

Method:

I took two sheets of cardstock.  One I scored and cut into a card aproximately 6″ square.  Onto the other I printed the digi-stamp at a suitable size.

I coloured in the digi-stamp in colours that were like the ones in the image.  I also, on the same sheet of cardstock, created a background panel of foliage using colours similar to the foliage in the sample image, and pulling on the blue/purple colours in some of the flowers in the image I did another panel which simply said Mam.  All the colouring, name and background were done using the Nubo pens.  I also drew a panel on the base card and coloured round the edge using the pens as well as using the pens to put a dotty background on the panel.

After cutting out the pieces on the sheet I attached the panel and name on the card front using wet glue and after shaping the cut out digi-stamp attached it using foam pads.

I hope you like my quick make and that you will join us in the Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog this month.

For March the theme is : Bouquet of Flowers”

As the theme is “Bouquet of Flowers”, your creation doesn’t even have to be a card so long you have something with lots of flowers on. Go on – pop over to the blog and have a go.

.

CREATION:

I decided to create an easel card on a box with a pull out drawer for my challenge inspiration creation this month, and as the collection launched by Dragons Lair Designs in April was “The Pansy Collection” what better flowers to use.

Bouquet 06

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

Equipment:

  • Scissors
  • Hougie Board

Method:

I used a background a topper and lots of floral elements from the collection to make this card.  Resizing them before printing and cutting them out.  I used my Hougie Board to score the cardstock from my stash to make the drawer and sleave, glueing this all together before attaching the background, which I’d scored to make an easel card.  I used wet glue to attach the topper to the easel after putting on glaze onto the vase part of it.  I used glue gel to attach two flowers as easel stoppers.

Bouquet 04

And as the theme is “Bouquet of Flowers” what better thing to put inside the box than lots of different flowers from the collection cut out and slightly shaped.  The recipient can use these either as table confettee or to embelish their own crafting projects.

Bouquet 03

CREATION:

I decided to decorate a frame for my Design Team Inspiration for this month’s Dragons Lair Designs Challenge.  I have lots of horse photos on my PC because my brother and sister-in-law run a horse stud from the family farm so I decided to decorate up a frame for one of the photos.

Animal07

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

Equipment:

  • Scissors
  • Craft Knife

Photo:

  • Stallion once owned by GenAl Stud (My brother’s family busines)

Method:

I printed out the horse photo onto glossy paper and the digi-stamp and background papers onto super smooth papers.

I coloured the digi-stamp with very light colours to take away the white but not to make it darker than the horse in the photo.  I think that it’s only when put against white, in daylight, that how much colour has been added can be noticed.

Animal06

One sheet of background was stuck on to cover the frame and another was used to make an inner frame mount.

The coloured digi-stamp was cut out and shaped with my fingers before being attached to the right side of the frame using foam tape.

I’ve started a new “A Little Extra Fun” challenge over on the “Dragons Lair Designs Fan Group”  on Facebook.

Often our “A Little Extra Fun” are quick questions, or small makes, but this time I decided to really challenge the group members with a multi tier challenge.  The more steps carried out the more Loyalty Points the group member gets.

Here’s the challenge as it was put up in the group:

This is my multi-level challenge for you (it’s a long one, so read carefully before you begin):
If you were locked in a room with a small assortment of items and asked to make a Mother’s Day or Father’s Day card, would you be able to make it?

This is what is in the room:

  • table and chair,
  • a pair of scissors,
  • an assortment of cardstock some of which have been printed with backgrounds from a Dragons Lair Designs collection of your choice,
  • some quick grab glue,
  • a black fineliner,
  • and a pack of assorted buttons

In my “heads up” post I said that I may be generous and give you something else – well I’m feeling really generous and want you to choose one piece of your crafting equipment to take in with you.

This equipment can be:

a digital cutting machine – but only with the cutting files that came with it when set up out of the box – no extra cutting files bought or downloaded from the internet; a die-cutting machine – but only with any dies or embossing folders that came with it out of the box; a particular punch or set of punches – so long as they came as a set originally; a favourite paper trimmer or guilotine; The Ultimate Crafter’s Companion Pro – but again only with the items that came with it originally; etc, etc.
– well I’m not feeling so generous as to allow you to take in every bit of kit in with you LOL

And this is the multi-level challenge for you:

You can just decide on your must have equipment.

You can make a Mother’s Day or Father’s Day card using your chosen equipment and what’s given and post a photo to this thread.

You can make a Mother’s Day or Father’s Day card using your chosen equipment and what’s given, taking photos as you are going along, and blog the lot, and post a link to your step-by-step blog as a comment below.

It’s up to you how much you want to do.

I’m going to give you 10 days for this “Little Extra Fun” so you have until 8pm on the 30th March to either just answer with your must have piece of equipment, or go further and make, or make and show step by step.

Anybody who tells us your must have piece of equipment, with reason, will get 1 loyalty point. Anybody who posts a photo of a card made using just the items listed and your must have piece of equipment will get 3 loyalty points. Anybody who posts a link to a blog post showing step by step how you made your card using just the items listed and your must have piece of equipment will get 5 loyalty points.

So – on your marks, get set – Go!

The Dragons Lair Designs collection I chose to print out some backgrounds from is the new “Oh Baby Mine Collection”, and my chosen piece of equipment to use is my Hougie Board.  I decided to go mad and make a Mother’s Day and a Father’s Day card at the same time.  I took photos of most of the steps as I was going through.

This is what I did:

I printed out a selection of backgrounds onto some of my white supersmooth cardstock.

I took everything with me to the kitchen table and started working.

CreateACard01

The first thing I did was use my board to score 2 of the unprinted sheets of cardstock in half and fold them.

CreateACard02

I then scored the fronts in half again and folded them back.

CreateACard03

These were stuck together back to back so that the foldbacks were on either side.

CreateACard04

I also scored another sheet in half for the other card.

CreateACard05

I cut one of the background squares out from the rest of the sheet and scored it down twice.

CreateACard06

I cut along the scored lines and attached the two panels that were the two sides to either side of my card front.

CreateACard07

I scored the third piece at the half way point, cut it into two strips, then scored each every 1cm.  I folded into a concertina at each score and stuck both strips together.

CreateACard09I then stuck the other ends together to make a circle from the concertina fold.  I too another of the printed backgrounds and roughly cut out a circle from it before cutting out a small circle pattern from the pattern.  I also too a chunk of torn plain paper.

CreateACard10

I put glue on the torn piece, pushed the concertina circle down onto it and glued the small circle on top to create a rosette.

I then cut a strip off the same cardstock before cutting lots of larger circles from the same cardstock.

CreateACard11

I used my scissors to snip in all round the edge of all the circular pieces.

CreateACard12

I set the circles out in four sets of three, putting some glue on two circular pieces from each set.

CreateACard13

I stacked up the layers and used the fine liner pen to dot a black pattern in the centre of each of the four pieces.

CreateACard14

I then used the Hougie Board pokey tool to shape around the edges of my “flowers”.

CreateACard15

I took another of the background patterns, scored them at the correct dimension to layer onto the card front, and also used the Hougie Board to score an embossed frame pattern around the edges of these panels.

CreateACard16

The panells were stuck to the front of my card and I used the fineliner pen to do a faux stitching line around the largest mats on both sides of the card front.

CreateACard17

I also used the fineliner to do a squigly line around the piece of the background I’d cut off before cutting out the “flower” circles.

CreateACard18

And fron another of the backgrounds I’d printed from the “Oh Baby Mine Collection” I cut out two tails which I stuck behind the rosette.  I wrote 1af, (Welsh for 1st) on the centre of the rosette.

CreateACard19

I cut 2 small strips out from another of the backgrounds I’d printed from the collection and wrote “I MAM” on them (Welsh for To Mother), and again did some faux stitching around the edge before sticking the strips to the centre of my card front.

CreateACard20

I then finished off the front of the Mother’s Day card by sticking on the flowers and some buttons.

CreateACard21

I then scored at the required size and cut a long strip from the same background I’d used for the “I MAM” and again did a squigly line around it.

CreateACard22

I took my other card blank and used my Hougie Board to score a cross hatch pattern towards the bottom right, for texture and interest.

CreateACard23

I went around the base card again adding a squiggly line using my fine liner pen, and then I attached the two strips I’d created previously.

CreateACard24

The card was finished off by sticking on the rosette and writing on the word DAD.

CreateACard25

And there you have it – my simple Mother’s Day and Father’s Day cards made using only what was specified.

 CreateACard21    CreateACard25

Sometimes it’s nice to have the challenge of going back to basics, with just simple equipment and consumables, and creating cards.  Much of what is done here can be made with bits from your bits box – I’m sure most crafters have a bits box that were left over from projects but were too big to throw away.  I’ve got more bits now – what was left over from this challenge LOL.

CreateACard26

This challenge is running on the Dragons Lair Designs Fan Group until the 30th, so if you feel like joining the group you too can join in and earn some loyalty points – which will be converted to a voucher to spend in the Dragons Lair Designs store once you hit the magic number.

Today a new challenge starts on the “Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog“.

DLD CB_BadgeDLD DT Badge Sept 2014Each ”Dragons Lair Designs Challenge” goes live the first Friday of the month with a new theme each time. The winner will get picked by “Random” so that it is fair for all levels of crafters. The winner gets a prize, as well as a badge for their blog, and the winning entry will also be highlighted on the challenge blog the following month. Although we’d love to see Dragons Lair Designs items on your creation, you may ENTER the challenge using ANY MATERIAL you wish as long as you clearly follow the set theme. You may enter the challenge with ONE entry per month. So why not consider joining in with us this month – go to the challenge blog and have a look at the rules and the inspiration created by my fellow Design Team members.

For March the theme is : More Than Two Folds

The title “More Than Two Folds” can be interpreted in so many different ways. Of course your creation can be a card with many folds, but the folds can also be seen within the embelishment as well.  And it doesn’t even have to be a card so long as it’s a crafted creation with “More Than Two Folds”. Go on – pop over to the blog and have a go.

.

CREATION:

I decided to go for a side stepper card with a little box for my inspiration for you this month.  The theme I’ve chosen is a little thank you card with teapot and tea cups, so the little box is to hold a little gift of a few tea bags.

MoreThanTwoFolds 01

Method:

I printed out three of the softer backgrounds from the Oh Baby Mine collection.

I resized the digi-stamps and printed out two of the set and two of the individual cup.  I then coloured these with my markers.  I again chose very soft colours for the main colouring.

MoreThanTwoFolds 09

I cut the cup out of the 2nd set digi-stamp to decoupage onto the full image.  From some angles the cup behind can be seen and it gives the impression that there are two cups by the teapot.

MoreThanTwoFolds 05

I used my ScanNCut to cut out the greeting “Diolch”, which is Welsh for “Thank You” from the gold vinyl.

I used my new Cut ‘n Boss to cut lots of lacy panels from the same white cardstock as I’d used to print on using Tattered Lace dies.  I also used Tattered Lace dies to cut out the base card and the mats from two of the backgrounds I’d printed.

Quick grab glue was then used to build up the card layers and glue gel was used to attach the coloured in digi-stamps.

MoreThanTwoFolds 08

Angled view of the stepper card – as you can see it has several folds in it –

MoreThanTwoFolds 04

I used my score board to score the third sheet of background at the sizes I wanted for my box and lid, before cutting it out and sticking both together.  I finished off by adding another lacy panel and the 2nd cup digi-stamp to the front.

For January the theme is : New Beginnings

The title “New Beginnings” can be interpreted in so many different ways.  You may be thinking in terms of the New Year, so your creation might be a New Years card or calendar, but you can also think in terms of a new job, new baby, new home, an engagement or wedding with the happy couple starting a new beginning together.

.

CARD:

I decided to go for a totally flat, one layer, card this time.  Something I’ve not done in a while.  I took papers and elements from the kit, together with the digi-stamp, into my My Craft Studio software.  With the paper set to A4 portrait I worked on the bottom half of the working area, building up my design how I wanted it using the digital punch as well as resizing, etc., features in the software.  I added a drop shaddow of various width to the layers and then printed the design out onto cardstock.  I used my new Chameleon pens to colour in the digi-stamp in shades that worked with the colours of the background.  I finished off by scoreing the sheet and folding it in half.

“Babi Newydd” is Welsh for “New Baby”.

NewBeginings02

I’ve tried to take an angled photo of the card to show that it really is flat and that the look of dimension has been created by giving “shadows” to the layers and elements in the software.

NewBeginings01

And here’s a close-up of an area of the card front.
