The winner will get picked by “Random” so that it is fair for all levels of crafters. The winner gets a prize, as well as a badge for their blog, and the winning entry will also be highlighted on the challenge blog the following month. Although we’d love to see Dragons Lair Designs items on your creation, you may ENTER the challenge using ANY MATERIAL you wish as long as you clearly follow the set theme. You may enter the challenge with ONE entry per month. So why not consider joining in with us this month – go to the challenge blog and have a look at the rules and the inspiration created by my fellow Design Team members.

For November the theme is : “Rainbows

Please join in and let us see what creation you come up with on the theme.

.

CREATION:

I decided to make quite a simple Welsh birthday card this time, colouring everything in a rainbow of colours rather than putting a rainbow on the card.

This is what I produced –

RainbowsBirthdayCard01

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

  • 1 x pre cut and scored 9″ square card
  • 1 x 250gsm Super Smooth white cardstock
  • Nuvo pens in colours 377, 391, 403, 415, 427, 429, 439
  • Chameleon Pens
  • Quick grab glue
  • Letraset fineline pen 0.5

Method:

I printed the digi-stamp and then coloured it in in rainbow colours using the Nubo pens.  I then took the card and drew on two double row of wiggly lines to create a frame.  I coloured the inside of the frame as a random sky and the inside of the frame in rainbow colours using the Chameleon Pens.  The coloured image was cut out, shaped a little bit, and then stuck to the card front.  I finished by writing on a greeting “Penblwydd Hapus”, which is Welsh for “Happy Birthday”.

I hope you like my quick make and that you will join us in the Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog this month.

Graduation Cards

Thank you for clicking over to have a look at my blog.

My niece graduated from uni. this year and I wanted something different to put on her card.  So I asked the talented Janette Padley of Dragons Lair Designs if she had a digi-stamp of a dragon wearing a mortar board graduation cap so I could colour it up as a little graduating red dragon.  It wasn’t long before she sent me exactly what I wanted – Thank you so much Janette.

Here’s the card I made, with everything cut out using Tattered Lace dies.

DragonGraduating 01 01

Llongyfarchiadau is Welsh for Congratulations!

Angled view to show dimension.

DragonGraduating 01 02

Close-up of digi-stamp – coloured with Pro-markers and Wink of Luna.

DragonGraduating 01 03

The papers I used are “Graduation Background Papers” by Lorraine Smith

I wanted to make a little gift to go with the card, in addition to giving her a bit of money, so out came a small assortment of my jewellery making supplies and I made a red bracelet.  But I wanted something special to go with it and bought a sterling silver little Welsh dragon charm to attach to the bracelet.

Here’s what I made –

Bracelet 28 01   Bracelet 28 02   Bracelet 28 03   Bracelet 28 04

I also made another, simple, card for my parents to give my niece.  Just using some of the backgrounds from the same collection and cut using a different set of Tattered Lace dies.

cup79550_631 - Graduation Background Papers - card01 01    cup79550_631 - Graduation Background Papers - card01 02

I left the inside back plain for my mother to write in.

Today a new challenge starts on the “Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog” – so it’s time for me to share the inspiration piece I created on this month’s theme.

DLD CB_BadgeDLD DT Badge Sept 2014Each ”Dragons Lair Designs Challenge” goes live the first Friday of the month with a new theme each time. The winner will get picked by “Random” so that it is fair for all levels of crafters. You may enter the challenge with ONE entry per month. For July the theme is : “Shabby Chic

As the theme is “Shabby Chic”, your creation doesn’t even have to be a card, it can be any hand crafted item that follows the theme. Go on – pop over to the blog and have a go.

.

CREATION:

I decided to decorate a box.  I’d previously started working on the box and didn’t like what I’d done, and so I’d painted all over it with black gesso to give me a blank canvas to start again.  When I saw the theme for this month I decided to get the box out again and have another go at decorating it.

This is what it looks like after I’d finished –

Jpeg

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

  • 250gsm Super Smooth white cardstock
  • Glue Gel
  • Quick grab wet glue
  • 3mm deep foam pads
  • White gel pen

Method:

I started by printing out the digi stamp at a size suitable for the aperture in the box lid, and also printing out one pink shade background from Simply Soft and one green background from Oh Baby Mine.

The digi was coloured in using ProMarkers and the backgrounds were used to make No Tools Paper Flowers 02 and torn paper leaves.

I cut the coloured digi into a panel the right size to fit inside the box lid and attached it with foam pads. I went round the lid aperture and the outside edge to put a dotty pattern with a white gel pen.

I finished off by using glue gel to attach the flowers and leaves I’d made.

Here’s a slightly different angled view of the box lid –

Jpeg

The person who set the theme said that she was looking for “Anything soft, feminine, flowery or lacy etc” – I haven’t used anything lacy, but I hope you all like it.

For June the theme is : Let’s Dance”

As the theme is “Let’s Dance”, your creation doesn’t even have to be a card so long you have something to do with dance on it. Go on – pop over to the blog and have a go.

.

CREATION:

I decided to create a card with an acetate dome with dancers in the background behind a garden arch with flowers.

LetsDance 04

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

Equipment:

  • Scissors
  • Hougie Board
  • Floral dies
  • Spellbinders gazebo die
  • My Craft Studio Software
  • Embossing folder
  • CutNBoss

Method:

I started by taking the digi-stamp into My Craft Studio, making two copies and turning one to a shade of grey behind the front dancers.  This was printed off and I created a background using two shades of Distress Inks.  This panel was then cut out.

I used an embossing folder and embossed a piece of the packaging it came in.  I cut out the gazebo, greeting (Llongyfarchiadau, which is Welsh for Congratulations) and flowers out of the same white cardstock I’d used for the digi-stamp.  I cut out the front rail of the gazebo to make an arch.

LetsDance 03

After cutting to size the dancers panel was stuck to the front of the embossed panel before I stuck a domed panel of acetate around the panel and stuck it ot the front of my card.  I then attached the arch, flowers, greeting and card candy both on top and below the acetate dome.

For March the theme is : Add an Animal”

As the theme is “Add an Animal”, your creation doesn’t even have to be a card so long you Add an Animal. Go on – pop over to the blog and have a go.

.

CREATION:

I decided to decorate a frame for my Design Team Inspiration for this month’s Dragons Lair Designs Challenge.  I have lots of horse photos on my PC because my brother and sister-in-law run a horse stud from the family farm so I decided to decorate up a frame for one of the photos.

Animal07

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

Equipment:

  • Scissors
  • Craft Knife

Photo:

  • Stallion once owned by GenAl Stud (My brother’s family busines)

Method:

I printed out the horse photo onto glossy paper and the digi-stamp and background papers onto super smooth papers.

I coloured the digi-stamp with very light colours to take away the white but not to make it darker than the horse in the photo.  I think that it’s only when put against white, in daylight, that how much colour has been added can be noticed.

Animal06

One sheet of background was stuck on to cover the frame and another was used to make an inner frame mount.

The coloured digi-stamp was cut out and shaped with my fingers before being attached to the right side of the frame using foam tape.

For March the theme is : More Than Two Folds

The title “More Than Two Folds” can be interpreted in so many different ways. Of course your creation can be a card with many folds, but the folds can also be seen within the embelishment as well.  And it doesn’t even have to be a card so long as it’s a crafted creation with “More Than Two Folds”. Go on – pop over to the blog and have a go.

.

CREATION:

I decided to go for a side stepper card with a little box for my inspiration for you this month.  The theme I’ve chosen is a little thank you card with teapot and tea cups, so the little box is to hold a little gift of a few tea bags.

MoreThanTwoFolds 01

Dragons Lair Designs Item:

Consumables:

Equipment:

Method:

I printed out three of the softer backgrounds from the Oh Baby Mine collection.

I resized the digi-stamps and printed out two of the set and two of the individual cup.  I then coloured these with my markers.  I again chose very soft colours for the main colouring.

MoreThanTwoFolds 09

I cut the cup out of the 2nd set digi-stamp to decoupage onto the full image.  From some angles the cup behind can be seen and it gives the impression that there are two cups by the teapot.

MoreThanTwoFolds 05

I used my ScanNCut to cut out the greeting “Diolch”, which is Welsh for “Thank You” from the gold vinyl.

I used my new Cut ‘n Boss to cut lots of lacy panels from the same white cardstock as I’d used to print on using Tattered Lace dies.  I also used Tattered Lace dies to cut out the base card and the mats from two of the backgrounds I’d printed.

Quick grab glue was then used to build up the card layers and glue gel was used to attach the coloured in digi-stamps.

MoreThanTwoFolds 08

Angled view of the stepper card – as you can see it has several folds in it –

MoreThanTwoFolds 04

I used my score board to score the third sheet of background at the sizes I wanted for my box and lid, before cutting it out and sticking both together.  I finished off by adding another lacy panel and the 2nd cup digi-stamp to the front.

Today a new challenge starts on the “Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog“.

For January the theme is : New Beginnings

The title “New Beginnings” can be interpreted in so many different ways.  You may be thinking in terms of the New Year, so your creation might be a New Years card or calendar, but you can also think in terms of a new job, new baby, new home, an engagement or wedding with the happy couple starting a new beginning together.

.

CARD:

I decided to go for a totally flat, one layer, card this time.  Something I’ve not done in a while.  I took papers and elements from the kit, together with the digi-stamp, into my My Craft Studio software.  With the paper set to A4 portrait I worked on the bottom half of the working area, building up my design how I wanted it using the digital punch as well as resizing, etc., features in the software.  I added a drop shaddow of various width to the layers and then printed the design out onto cardstock.  I used my new Chameleon pens to colour in the digi-stamp in shades that worked with the colours of the background.  I finished off by scoreing the sheet and folding it in half.

“Babi Newydd” is Welsh for “New Baby”.

NewBeginings02

I’ve tried to take an angled photo of the card to show that it really is flat and that the look of dimension has been created by giving “shadows” to the layers and elements in the software.

And here’s a close-up of an area of the card front.

I started off by printing a sky background onto the white cardstock.  I then took the tree frame digi-stamp into my graphics package, changed the trunk colour to a deep brown and re-sized to what I required before printing it off over the sky background.  I also took the Penny’s Apples digi-stamp into the same software and sized it to what I wanted.  I made a second copy and cropped out some of the couple of the front apples and multipied them on my working area, some at a slightly different size, before I printed the lot out on another sheet of the white cardstock.  I then coloured them in using my ProMarkers.  I cut out all these items.  I took the brown Basal cardstock into my ScanNCut and cut out a large square.  I scored this some 1.5″ in from the left side and folded it over.  I used template tape to attach the white Basal cardstock inside this folded over back and cut it around to match the front, thus making a white back to my card.  Having measured my tree frame I then cut out two mats of the size needed, from the dotty cardstock, using my ScanNCut.  I also used my ScanNCut, and two different leaf shapes inbuilt into it, to cut out lots of little leaves from the left-over cardstock for the two matt layers and also from cutting out Penny and the apples.  These white leaves I coloured with one of the brown ProMarkers I’d used on the image, and also used it to edge some of the other leaves.  I then used finger-lift tape to attach the mats and main image and glue gel to attach Penny, the apples and the leaves – all of which I’d shaped slightly first.

Design Team Creation

It’s time for another inspiration post from me on the “Dragons Lair Designs Inspiration Blog“. Hopefully I can inspire you with a crafted creation made using two downloads that is available in the Dragons Lair Designs Store.

I’ve gone away from cardmaking and scrapbooking this time and decorated a canvas with a prayer, papers and a simple digi-stamp of a loaf of bread.  With string attached to the back it is created to hang in a dining room or kitchen.

I was tempted to add a lot of other things to it, but everything I put on, just to see, came right off again because it just didn’t look right to me – somehow the words “keep it simple” seemed to apply this time.

.

CANVAS

This is how I decorated my canvas –

Canvas 01 05

The prayer is in Welsh and a simple translation of the verse is:

Oh Father, as a contented family
we come, and thank you anew,
because from your hand there comes each day
our food and our joy.
Amen

This is an angled view of the canvas showing the little dimension introduced:

Dragons Lair Designs Items:

  • “Bread Pack”
  • “Simply Soft Collection -Papers”

Consumables:

Equipment:

  • Scissors
  • Paint Brush

Method:

I started by printing out an assortment of the papers at different sizes, as well as printing out the digi-stamp of the sliced rustic loaf at around 2″ in length.  I used a brown watercolour pencil to colour in the digi-stamp and then cut it out.  I cut out the panels of the papers and after laying the largest towards the top of my canvas I started playing around with positions of the rest and tore the edges of anything that wasn’t along the outside of the canvas.  I used quick grab glue to stick everything onto the canvas, leaving a small white edge of the canvas all the way around.  I opened one of the backgrounds in My Craft Studio and re-sized it to the size I wanted before typing the prayer in a layer over the top.  This was also printed out and cut.  I shaped/bowed both the prayer and the loaf of bread and used the same glue to attach these at their left and right hand sides to the front of the canvas, holding for half a minute until the glue grabbed and held the item with the shape I wanted.  I then took a dry paint brush and some white paint and dry brushed very lightly in from the edges all the way around to soften the outside edge of the paper panels.

And that is it from me for today. I hope my little creation will inspire you to visit the Stamping Dragon Designs store and have a play with some of the digital downloads available to buy yourself.

Please keep visiting”The Dragons Den” blog over the next few weeks as you’ll find various “Inspiration by …” posts appear from the other design team members, as well as colouring tutorials and other posts. I’ll be back with more posts for “The Dragons Den” over the coming months as well, so keep an eye out for those too.

Today a new challenge starts on the “Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog“.

There’s been a bit of a face-lift and a change of name – What use to be called “Stampin’ Dragon Designs Challenge Blog” is now “Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog” so that the name “Dragons Lair Designs” runs through all of the sister sites – be it the store, challenge blog, inspiration blog, etc.

PrizeDLD CB_BadgeSo – each ”Dragons Laire Designs Challenge Blog” challenge goes live the first Friday of the month with a new theme each time. The winner will get picked by “Random” so that it is fair for all levels of crafters.  The winner this month gets a prize of The Coffee Cream paper pack from DLD, as well as a badge for their blog, and the winning entry will also be highlighted on the challenge blog the following month. Although we’d love to see Dragons Lair Designs items on your creation, you may ENTER the challenge using ANY MATERIAL you wish as long as you clearly follow the set theme. You may enter the challenge with only 1 entry per month. So why not consider joining in with us this month – go to the challenge blog and have a look at the rules and the inspiration created by my fellow Design Team members.

For September the theme is : ANYTHING BUT A CARD

.

PROJECT:

I’ve chosen three fairies from the store for my project and decorated a small, tripple frame, wall hanging to hold them.  Although the fairies look very similar, especially when coloured up in the same colour scheme, they are not the same fairy in different poses, as you will spot if you look carefully at their wing size and shape.

Part of the “little extra fun” we had on the Stamping Dragon Designs Facebook Group a few months ago was some fun activities to name the two bottom fairies.  By some strange quirk of fate, both their names started with ‘A’, one with a Welsh name and one with an English name, so I suggested to my young nephews, who gave a list of suggestions for the group members to vote on for the Welsh name, that they should choose a name starting with an ‘A’ for the top fairy.

FairyHanger 03

Thumbnail photos of some different areas/angles of this card. Hopefully you can see the sparkle on areas of the fairies.

This fairy in the top frame has now been named Azelize.

FairyHanger 04

This sitting fairy in the middle frame has now been named Anwen Seren Elen
(a big name for such a little fairy but the three names had the same number of votes).

FairyHanger 05

This kneeling fairy in the bottom frame was named Amelia, the nephews choosing their favourite from a list of sugestions that members of the SDD FB group came up with.

Method:

Firstly I measured the aperture of the frames, which is 4 centimeters, and then I printed each image out at a size that would fit into the frames.  As the images were so small I had to add a fine nib to each of my ProMarkers to colour in the digi-stamps (Note to self – next time you do a dinky little project like this – choose some pre-coloured images to use or buy larger frames – the areas to colour are tiny at this size and very difficult to do, even on my best days.  That’s not to say that others without dexterity issues would have a problem of course.)  I used the acetate front of the frames to put over the image to position them properly and drew a line around and cut them out the correct size for the frame.

I then painted the frames using white acrylic paint.  After it was dry I mixed a small amount of blue into white and dry brushed it over some areas.  I then painted on some green swirls, and put in the three images.  I then used my ScanNCut to cut out some flowers to decorate the frames, sticking these on using glue gel.  I coloured the clear gems with two of the ProMarkers I’d used on the image to put in the centre.  I finished off by tying some of the embroydery floss to the joining rings, breaking the groups of six appart to give a fluffier look.
