Unfortunately there was a problem with this blog earlier in the month, when I did my main monthly post on the Dragons Lair Designs Inspiration Blog, so I couldn’t put a copy of what I said up on my own blog at that time – but “better late than never” as they say – so there follows a copy of what I said on the Inspiration Blog.

Hi Everybody!

I know it’s usual to do a “Look Back” at the end of the year, but I thought I’d do a bit of a look back at how I got to be writing regularly for what is now called the Dragons Lair Designs Inspiration Blog, at the begining of this year.

I first came across the work of Janette Padley on the website craftsUprint.  Having been doing a variety of crafting most of my life I joined craftsUprint as a registered cardmaker way back in 2010.  But it wasn’t until October 2012 that I made my first couple of cards using Janette’s work.

These are the first two cards I ever made using two of Janette’s wonderful digi-stamps of fun dragons –

Jiggy Dragon at the Beach Stamp – available in the Dragons Lair Designs Store and on cUp.

Rupert says Hello – available in the Dragons Lair Designs Store and on cUp.

Most of my early creations made using items from Dragons Lair Designs (DLD) were made using digi stamps bought via cUp, but I did then venture into using other digital downloads created by Janette as time went on.

After I’d done the first few creations using DLD items I was introduced to the Dragons Lair Designs Fan Group on Facebook and asked whether I’d like to join.  Having found out a bit about the group I jumped at the chance and it wasn’t long before I was joining in the chat and challenges on offer there, and posting pictures of my creations made using DLD items.

When Fan Group members were asked if anybody would like to do a Guest post on this Dragons Lair Designs Inspiration Blog I put my name forward and was given a date some months ahead.

Then, out of the blue, before my Guest post had even gone live, I was offered the chance to be a permanent member of the DT.  With my health being up and down, and no saying when I would or wouldn’t be able to do postings, I agreed to take the DT member position on the understanding that the then DT leader was aware that I might be missing out on posts and other DT member activities occasionally.

So, I was in the strange position of my 1st post as a DT member on this Inspiration Blog (19-09-2013) actually appearing before my Guest post (16-11-2013).

This was my 1st creation to be blogged on this DLD Inspiration Blog –

Made using a digi-stamp of a Giraffe – available in the Dragons Lair Designs Store and on cUp.

I also joined the Design Team for the DLD Challenge Blog with my 1st creation for that team going live in April 2014.

Over time things like the names of the blogs and the name of Janette’s online store might have changed, I’ve even been made the Design Team Leader for the DLD Inspiration Blog, but the quality of the digital downloads available is still the same high quality, and the variety just grows as Janette adds new items.

So, looking forward to what’s going on in 2016 – well, there’s a new collection coming out 1st February so you’ll see lots of inspiration posts appearing in this blog showcasing some things that can be done with that.  Also, after having a break for January, there will be a new challenge starting on the Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog the 1st Friday of February as well.  And for an even more regular fix of all things Dragons Lair then please do join us in the Dragons Lair Designs Fan Group.

-oOo-

There are two things I’d like to add –

Dragons Lair Designs are currently running a Design Team Call

and

There’s currently a big discount available in the Dragons Lair Designs Store

And that is it from me for today.

Please visit the “Dragons Lair Designs Inspiration Blog” regularly over the next few weeks as you’ll find various “Inspiration by …” posts appear from the other design team members. I’ll hopefully be back posting more regularly over the comming months with Dragons Lair Designs and other crafty makes.

Graduation Cards

Thank you for clicking over to have a look at my blog.

My niece graduated from uni. this year and I wanted something different to put on her card.  So I asked the talented Janette Padley of Dragons Lair Designs if she had a digi-stamp of a dragon wearing a mortar board graduation cap so I could colour it up as a little graduating red dragon.  It wasn’t long before she sent me exactly what I wanted – Thank you so much Janette.

Here’s the card I made, with everything cut out using Tattered Lace dies.

Llongyfarchiadau is Welsh for Congratulations!

Angled view to show dimension.

The papers I used are “Graduation Background Papers” by Lorraine Smith

I wanted to make a little gift to go with the card, in addition to giving her a bit of money, so out came a small assortment of my jewellery making supplies and I made a red bracelet.  But I wanted something special to go with it and bought a sterling silver little Welsh dragon charm to attach to the bracelet.

Here’s what I made –

Bracelet 28 01   Bracelet 28 02   Bracelet 28 03   Bracelet 28 04

I also made another, simple, card for my parents to give my niece.  Just using some of the backgrounds from the same collection and cut using a different set of Tattered Lace dies.

Design Team Card

-oOo-

Today a new challenge starts on the “Dragons Lair Designs Challenge Blog“.

DLD CB_BadgeDLD DT Badge Sept 2014Each ”Dragons Lair Designs Challenge” goes live the first Friday of the month with a new theme each time. The winner will get picked by “Random” so that it is fair for all levels of crafters.  The winner gets a prize, as well as a badge for their blog, and the winning entry will also be highlighted on the challenge blog the following month. Although we’d love to see Dragons Lair Designs items on your creation, you may ENTER the challenge using ANY MATERIAL you wish as long as you clearly follow the set theme. You may enter the challenge with 1 entry per month. So why not consider joining in with us this month – go to the challenge blog and have a look at the rules and the inspiration created by my fellow Design Team members.

For December the theme is : CHRISTMAS TIME

.

PROJECTS:

I’ve chosen to use My Craft Studio software to build my card front.  this is what the digital card front looks like.

Christmas Gifts Coloured - card01 01

I then printed the design out and put it onto a card, decorating the card with glitter glue and foil.

Christmas Gifts Coloured - card02 01

Christmas Gifts Coloured - card02 03   Christmas Gifts Coloured - card02 04

By making the card 6″ square, and keeping the dimension down by building up the design in the software before printing, the card itself is of small enough dimensions to be posted with a standard letter stamp in the UK – postage costs being something that most people are consious of, especially at Christmas when they may have lots of cards to post.

– o O o –

As well as playing around with a digital layout with the image I also printed the image out twice at the same size at smaller than provided.  Both the images were then cut out and I made two very different cards with them.

The first is a very CAS (Clean and Simple) card, with only the topper and peel-off greeting.

Christmas Gifts Coloured - card03 03

Again the card, at A6 size, is small enough to go through the post on a standard letter stamp, and with minimal dimension created by attaching the topper with a small layer of glue gel it is shallow enough for the cheapest stamp as well.

Christmas Gifts Coloured - card03 01

For the second card I took a 6″ square card and used my circle scissors to turn it into a circular card.  The front was then scored and folded to create an easel card.  I used my circle scissors again to cut out panels of foil dotted Adorable Scorable cardstock for the outside and inside, as well as cutting the greetings panel/stopper and snowflake embelishments (see details in my “Hints and Tips” section on my previous blog post -> Here!

Launch Day Creation

-oOo-

DLD DT Badge Sept 2014Today a new collection has launched in the “Dragons Lair Designs Shop“ and as a member of the Dragons Lair Designs Design Team I got my hands on part of the collection ahead of time to work with.

The new collection is in a lovely vintage style – and as the title suggests – is all about Christmas.

Although it is lovely to make all sorts of creations ahead of Christmas for any sort of crafting, don’t forget that it can be used after Christmas to scrapbook photos taken during Christmas, or, if like many, you have old family photos sitting in a box that you’ve promissed  yourself you scrapbook with at some point during the coming year then you are sure to find something in this collection to use with them.

I hope you like my creation.

Design Team Creation

-oOo-

It’s time for another inspiration post from me on the “Dragons Lair Designs Inspiration Blog“. Hopefully I can inspire you with a crafted creation made using two downloads that is available in the Dragons Lair Designs Store.

I’ve gone away from cardmaking and scrapbooking this time and decorated a canvas with a prayer, papers and a simple digi-stamp of a loaf of bread.  With string attached to the back it is created to hang in a dining room or kitchen.

I was tempted to add a lot of other things to it, but everything I put on, just to see, came right off again because it just didn’t look right to me – somehow the words “keep it simple” seemed to apply this time.

.

CANVAS

This is how I decorated my canvas –

Canvas 01 05

The prayer is in Welsh and a simple translation of the verse is:

Oh Father, as a contented family
we come, and thank you anew,
because from your hand there comes each day
our food and our joy.
Amen

This is an angled view of the canvas showing the little dimension introduced:

Canvas 01 03

Dragons Lair Designs Items:

  • “Bread Pack”
  • “Simply Soft Collection -Papers”

Consumables:

Equipment:

  • Scissors
  • Paint Brush

Method:

I started by printing out an assortment of the papers at different sizes, as well as printing out the digi-stamp of the sliced rustic loaf at around 2″ in length.  I used a brown watercolour pencil to colour in the digi-stamp and then cut it out.  I cut out the panels of the papers and after laying the largest towards the top of my canvas I started playing around with positions of the rest and tore the edges of anything that wasn’t along the outside of the canvas.  I used quick grab glue to stick everything onto the canvas, leaving a small white edge of the canvas all the way around.  I opened one of the backgrounds in My Craft Studio and re-sized it to the size I wanted before typing the prayer in a layer over the top.  This was also printed out and cut.  I shaped/bowed both the prayer and the loaf of bread and used the same glue to attach these at their left and right hand sides to the front of the canvas, holding for half a minute until the glue grabbed and held the item with the shape I wanted.  I then took a dry paint brush and some white paint and dry brushed very lightly in from the edges all the way around to soften the outside edge of the paper panels.

-oOo-

And that is it from me for today. I hope my little creation will inspire you to visit the Stamping Dragon Designs store and have a play with some of the digital downloads available to buy yourself.

Please keep visiting”The Dragons Den” blog over the next few weeks as you’ll find various “Inspiration by …” posts appear from the other design team members, as well as colouring tutorials and other posts. For October the theme is : ANYTHING GOES

As the theme this month is “ANYTHING GOES” I decided to use a scrapbooking kit, but used elements from it to make a card and a matching gift.

For both of these I took elements from the kit into the My Craft Studio software and resized, moved around, etc., until I had the layout I wanted for the front of a DL birthday card.  I then copied the layout beneath it and changed the wording on the second copy.  I put a second copy of the panel on the right of the card, together with further copies of the little embelishments at two different sizes, to fill up the rest of the page.  The design was then printed out and cut out.  I went over the extra panel with the clear glaze pen a couple of times and then left it to dry while I scored, folded and trimmed on of the sheets of cardstock to make the base card and one to make a cover for my gift.  I scored to put a 1cm spine on the gift.  I used fingerlift tape to attach the fronts to both, ans well as to attach the Stick-it notepad and stamp book inside the gift.  I used twisted bakers twine a little piece of cardstock and some ultra tacky tape to create a loop to attach the pen.  Once the panel was dry I attached that to the front of my card using foam tape.  I then added the extra elements, shaping them a bit and attaching using glue gel.

It’s time for another inspiration post from me on the “The Dragons Den” blog. Hopefully I can inspire you with some creations made with a kit that is available in the Stamping Dragon Designs store.

Normally, when I do a lot of digital design construction, with elements from a kit, I still print them out at the end and usually do a bit of hybrid crafting with the design I’ve come up with.  But today I decided to go a different route, I decided to take one kit from the store, and use it to create several digital layouts.  The kit I chose had an old style photo within it, so I decided to use that as a focus for all the digital layouts, but to see what different looks I could get around it just using items from the kit.  Although I’ve done them as digital scrapbook layouts, the same sort of ideas can be used for card fronts (making the different layers digitally apear to be dimensional, rather than having to build up lots of layers on a card means less weight and less hight on a finished card which can help postage costs a lot), or you could have a play and substitute one or more of your own photos into similar layouts.

Even if you never print off your digital creations, or never even show them to anybody else, the aim of this inspiration post is to show you that if you play with just one digital kit you can get different looks.  And if you do decide to print off your creations and perhaps add a bit of glitter and glaze, you can have fab results.

.

SCRAPBOOK LAYOUTS

This is the 1st layout I made –

Deco Daze Collection - Page Kit 1

This is the 2nd digital layout I made.

Deco Daze Collection - Page Kit 2

And this is the 3rd layout

Deco Daze Collection - Page Kit 3

Stamping Dragon Designs Item:

  • “Deco Daze Collection – Page Kit” – found – Here – in the shop.

Consumables:

  • No Consumables Used – as I’ve only made these as digital layouts I’ve not used any consumables this time.

Equipment:

  • No Crafting Equipment Used – other than my laptop and the software installed on it.  I used My Craft Studio Elite, but you can have a play with other software such as Serif CraftArtist 2 to get similar results.

Method:

Today the method is simple – I just took the papers and elements from the kit into my graphics package and played!  Resizing, layering up, moving around, etc., etc.!

-oOo-

And that is it from me for today. I hope my little creation will inspire you to visit the Stamping Dragon Designs store and have a play with some of the digital downloads available to buy yourself.

A Few Bits Of Papercraft

-oOo-

Had to take my car in for an M.O.T. on Tuesday – thankfully it passed without needing anything this time, but there are a few advisories of things that look to be geting near the end of their life and may need to be replaced over the next few months.  So no major cost this time but it will need a bit of money spent on it before the next M.O.T.

I’ve had one or the other of my youngest nephews in and out of here for periods over the last few days, so haven’t done a huge amount of crafting as I’ve been doing things with them when they are here, from starting to tidy the spare room – one of their Bobcat toys was missing believed to be in the spare room so nephew was very keen to start help with the tidying – toy found!  Same nephew had also bought over a jug full of blackberries that he’d picked so that I could help him make a blackberry tart – he has a wonderful touch with breadcrumbing the pastry and mixing it up – better than me I think, so basicly all I had to do was give him the weights and measures of flour, etc., needed as he couldn’t remember.  And I just sat and watched and gave a couple of hints.  Of course I had to take the pie out of the oven for him.  He then took it home – so didn’t get to taste it.  But he had made some Marmite biscuits with the spare bits of pastry and it was really beautifully made.

Wednesday morning I had my ScanNCut machine out again.  I have started putting what I cut together – some complete which I’ve got to show you today, and some left to finish – so keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks for what I’m working on.

I hope you like the things I’ve got to show you this time.

Digital Stamp Fuschia with coloured version too by Pamela West and 398 Shaped Card 1 *ScanNCut* by Rae Carr (I printed the digital stamp sheet out at a much smaller size than provided onto 300gsm Super Smooth white cardstock and then coloured the digital stamp using my ProMarkers and a FlexMarker.  The colours I used were: Tropical Orchid, Spring Lilac, Pink Pearl, Yellow, Olive Green.  I then cut it out and went round the edge using n Imperial Purple FlexMarker. I cut out card shape from Basal cardstock and mat layer from Topsy Turvy cardstock using my ScanNCut machine.  I’d taken the cutting file into the online Canvas application, resized together to keep the proportions, and then downloaded the cutting file to my USB stick to take it to the ScanNCut. I used my Hougie Board to score the fold line of the base and folded in half. I wrapped a piece of lace ribbon around the mat before attaching it to the card front using 2mm deep, double sided, foam tape.  I used the same foam tape to attach the panel with the coloured digi-stamp.  I finished off by using glue gel to attach some flowers, also cut using my ScanNCut from the same duo cardstock as the mat but used the darker side here, and placed flat back faux pearls in the centre.  I’ve got room to put a greeting near the bottom left once I know what language it is needed in.)

  1. Cute vintage dog topper & decoupage by Toni Martin (I printed the sheet out onto 250gsm Super Smooth white cardstock and cut out the peices.  I scored a pale yellow Adorable Scorable A4 sheet and folded it in half to make my base card.  The card front layer was attached using finger-lift tape and the topper was attached to this using 3mm deep, double sided, foam tape.  I don’t know what greeting or language will be needed yet so I’ve attached the blank greeting panel using 2mm deep, double sided, foam tape.)

OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE COLOURING:

On the Stamping Dragon Designs FB group our design team leader has challenged us to a fun challenge to “COLOUR A SDD IMAGE IN COLOURS YOU NORMALLY DONT USE”, with loyalty points going to anybody who takes part in the challenge.

Now I took a look at my quite substantial range of ProMarkers and FlexMarkers and couldn’t see anything there that I don’t normally use over time.  What I did realise was that I tend to be quite co-ordinating and that there were some colours I haven’t used on the same image.

So I printed out a Stamping Dragon Design digi-stamp and went a bit mad and messy with the colours – How does a Starfish coloured dragon with Sky Blue coloured feet and tail grab you?

  1. Lulu Dragon Painting Digital Stamp by Janette Padley (I printed the digi-stamp out onto 300gsm Super Smooth white cardstock and coloured it in using my ProMarkers and FlexMarkers.  The colours I used were: Starfish, Sky Blue, Poppy, Tropical Orchid, Amber, Terracotta, Island Lagoon, Imperial Purple.  As the challenge was simply to colour in an SDD digi-stamp I’ve not made this up into a card yet.  Hopefully I’ll be able to do that at some point over the weekend or next week.  I’m thinking of a child’s card.)

BAG:

A really sweet little bag that would be great for a little gift. Decorate in a way that’s appropriate for the contents and recipient.

A Small Assortment Of Crafts

-oOo-

Hi to all visitors to my blog.  Today I’ve got some creations to show you made using digital downloads I got for free as well as some creations made using air drying clay.  Now if you really want a laugh then keep scrolling down to the last creation on the page and tell me what you think.  I’m really not very good at making little characters.  I was aiming for a monkey face but my mother tells me I’ve made a bear.

CARDS:

All the digital download elements on this card were free and were created by Janette Padley of Stamping Dragon Designs.

  1. “Vintage Lady” digi stamp from freebie sample pack, papers and paper ribbon from “Summer Time Freebie” – both from freebies album on SDD FB group, and flower from August 2014 freebie at the SDD store. (I printed papers, paper ribbon and paper flower, as well as the digi-stamp, out onto 250gsm Super Smooth white cardstock.  I then coloured in the digi-stamp using gold and red Wink of Luna for the frame and frame embelishments and Promarkers for the lady.  The colours I used were: Gold, Amber, Pumpkin, Cinnamon, Cocoa, Blush, Cool Grey 3 and Satin. I took a 6″ square, scalloped edge, base card and yellow Dainty Dots cardstock, and cut out everything, rounded a few corners with a corner punch and attached the whole lot together with quick grab wet glue.  I didn’t glue right to the edge of all the elements so that the edges lift a bit to give an illusion of dimension, but the card is in actual fact quite flat and will go through the post in the UK using a standard letter stamp.)

  3. Close-up of coloured in digi-stamp.

SCRAPBOOK PAGE LAYOUT:

I made this for the August Colouring Challenge on the Stamping Dragon Designs Facebook Group.  All group members can request the month’s image provided they promise to upload a photo of a finished article made using the digi-stamp before the end of the month.  This particular digi-stamp – “Pup in Pumkin” – is also available to buy in the Stamping Dragon Design store.

1Pup in Pumkin 01 04 2Pup in Pumkin 01 01

  1. This is a simple 8″ square scrapbook layout using a photo I’d taken of our pumpkin, the adorable little digi-stamp coloured in with ProMarkers, and pieces from the “Summer Time Freebie” available in the freebies album in this group. (The elements from the free kit, the digi-stamp and my photo of our cut pumpkin were all printed out onto 250gsm Super Smoth white cardstock.  I then coloured in the digi-stamp using my ProMarkers.  Colours used were:  Black, Cool Grey 1, 3 and 5, Gold, Amber, Pumpkin and Pear Green. I cut a piece of brown Basal cardstock to 8″ square to start off with, made mats of yellow Dainty Dots cardstock and orange Blingalicious cardstock, then cut out the elements, mats and layers and stuck everything together using glue gel.)

3D CREATIONS:

For this floral wreath I made lots of flowers and a few butterflies – though I wasn’t trying to make any specific type of flowers – which is a good thing because I don’t think they look exactly like any specific flower.

  1. Ring, 21,5 cm, Polystyrene, 1 pc and Silk Clay – Assortment, Basic 1, 20×40 g  (I took the ring and coloured it with a gold Wink of Luna pen.  I then took several colours from the various Silk Clay pots and made flowers, leaves, and butterflies from them – some made using Martha Stewart silicone molds and some made free-hand, adding faux stamens to some as I built them.  Once the created pieces were dry I put a ribbon around the topof the ring and used glue gel to attach all the pieces.)
  2. Slightly angled view of the floral wreath.
  3. Close-up of some of the flowers.

Design Team Card

It’s time for another inspiration post from me on the “The Dragons Den” blog. Hopefully I can inspire you with a crafted creation made using some downloads that are available in the Stamping Dragon Designs store.

I hope that you like what I’ve got to show you this time.

CARD

This is the card I made –

August Inspiration 02

Below are closer looks at the card

August Inspiration 03     August Inspiration 01

Stamping Dragon Designs Item:

  • “Uncle Perrys Gift” – found – Here – in the shop.
  • “Blue Harmony Papers” – found – Here – in the shop.
  • “Simply Lovable Collection CD Rom” – found – Here – in the shop.

Consumables:

Equipment:

Method:

For this card I printed out some items from the CD-ROM to use as background elements, cutting a strip of one and putting it across the centre as a paper ribbon.  I went over the edges of this paper ribbon and the shaped panel with a ProMarker to make it stand out.  I also punshed two corner paper punches on the background and the blue Topsy Turvy mat to create interlocking corners.  I printed the dragons digi-stamp out three times, once onto plain cardstock, twice more onto paper already printed with two of the blue backgrounds from the blue harmony kit.  I cut out all of these, making the two blues paper piecing pieces for the two dragons.  I used the blue ProMarker to colour some parts of Uncle Perry and the Blue Grey FlexMarker to put in shading around the lines of both the dragons.  The Wink of Stella pens were used to colour in the parsel and the white gel pen to do Uncle Perry’s eyes and teeth.  I shaped these and used glue gel to attached the pieces image to the card front.

I’ll be back with more posts for “The Dragons Den” over the coming months as well, so keep an eye out for those too.
